Summer 2010: Meet Our High School Speaker

As hard as we tried, we weren't able to get any of the 1st 15 speakers we asked to come for High School camp to say yes. This meant that for our brochures, it looked as if there wasn't going to be a speaker! BUT... sometimes it's worth the wait.

We are very excited to have Ryan Low coming up to speak to the High School group. You can read more about Ryan below. We look forward to seeing you there!

Ryan Low: High School

Ryan Low has served for the last nine years as a Resident director at Biola University. Before that he was a youth pastor for eight years. During this time he has seen God build in him a passion for seeing lives changed by the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ. To him, there is nothing more amazing than seeing people come to know Jesus as their lord and savior and then to be on the journey with him as their lives are given meaning, purpose, and they are filled with his power to make an incredible impact for the kingdom of God. Ryan has been married for twelve years to Alyssa Low and is father of two beautiful children: Emily and William.

Winter Ends Summer Begins

We recently ended our summer camp program at Camp AREV. We really enjoyed the time we spent with campers this winter. Whether it was the great fellowship & learning from College camp, the awesome conversations that went on with the High Schoolers, the games we played with the Junior Highers, or running in the freshly falling snow with the Juniors, our time was blessed. It is a great priviledge to work with these young people and to watch how the Lord works in their lives through the staff.

I am so excited to think what this summer will hold! There are many opportunities to make a great camp session. I wonder who out there will be involved and in what ways people will see the Lord has given them so much that they can bless camp through! I can't wait to see what campers will attend our camps, and who will be changed forever as a result of something they learn.

Be praying for us as we get ready for the things to come, and I hope you will find a way to be involved with the camp preparations yourself! Please e-mail us with ideas, or comments.

In Christ's love,
Jennifer Abadjian

Winter Camp 2010 Speakers

Timothy Sherritt - College

I am the middle child of three boys, with incredibly loving parents. I grew up in Mission Viejo, CA. and moved to San Luis Obispo for college. This is where God radically changed my mind about him and this life. My plans were to enter into sports medicine, but God had other plans. Today I am a pastor at Evangelical Free Church of Diamond Bar where I get to do what I love – teach and disciple college/post-college students. My other passions are Ultimate Frisbee, surfing, and reading. I have never been married, but it is through this prolonged journey of singleness that God has taught me what it means for His grace to be sufficient.

David Cordova - High School

David Cordova is the Master Barber and educator at Dean Anthony Salon in Long Beach. He grew up in Whittier, California, and has a B.A. in Biblical and Theological Studies from Biola University, where he began to see the beauty of God more clearly. While at Biola, David also earned a certificate in Christian Apologetics from Talbot School of Theology. In May of 2008, he accepted the call to serve as intern to the High School ministry at Grace Brethren Church, Long Beach. He has also been involved in helping foster care children in both Orange County and Los Angeles County. David has contributed to a DVD series entitled Deeper Connections, a series that “connects the Bible to life.” David and his wife, Alyssa, live in Long Beach, CA.

Haig Darakjian - Junior High

My name is Haig. I grew up attending UACC and I went to almost every Camp AREV retreat that I could. I was raised in a Christian family and I attended Merdinian and Sahag-Mesrob, both Armenian Christian schools. Even though I grew up in a Christian community, God worked powerfully in my life to begin a genuine relationship with me when I was in high school. I really began to love Him then. When I was at UC San Diego, God called me to serve him as a pastor. So I began my studies at Talbot School of Theology. I currently love working as a youth leader at UACC and I can’t wait to graduate in May so I can serve God full time. He is worthy!

Trina Bahadourian - Juniors

G’day! It’s a pleasure to meet you… My life began in 1983 in the wonderful land Down Under (aka. Sydney, Australia). In 2008 I moved from there to Los Angeles after a LONG distance relationship to marry Aren Bahadourian who is a huge blessing to me from God. Since accepting Christ as a child I feel God continues to burden my heart more and more to serve him among children and teens. One of the main experiences that confirmed God’s leading to ministering to children was the amazing way God opened doors for me to spend three months in Switzerland in 2004 with Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) and participate in their Training Institute. Currently I serve in youth ministry at our church and work at Living Well a Pregnancy Crisis Center in Pasadena where God is teaching me I need Him every hour. Please pray that God would prepare all our hearts and do His work in my own heart as I join you at camp. I look forward to meeting you there! - Trina

Winter & Summer 2010...

Our Winter Camp is quickly approaching, and summer is not too far behind! We really want as many people as possible to be able to participate in our sessions. Whether you are a guest at one of our Kebab nights, an interested staff member, or an enthusiastic camper, we hope to see you there! We spend quite a bit of time asking each church and many of the schools what their calendars look like for the year to make sure there are no conflicts. If you know of events (sports tournaments, weddings, etc) that take place in January- March, or in July - August, please let us know so that you too can be included! Even if you aren't planning on coming, we'd love to make sure that others have the chance, so your help is appreciated!

Thanks and have a happy Fall!

Jen

his Master’s of Divinity. He received his BA in Biblical Studies from Biola
University in 2007. Adam has served 4 years as a Teacher’s Assistant for Dave Talley, Associate Professor of Old Testament at Biola University. He has also served as a research assistant for numerous books and journal articles produced by the faculty of Biola University, where he teaches as an adjunct professor and Guest Lecturer in the Biblical Studies Department. Along side his academic interests, Adam has a passion for the local church. He has served as an intern in the areas of Junior High, Senior High, and administration. In addition, during the summer of 2007, Adam had the opportunity to serve as an assistant to the Senior Pastor at Zion Reformed Church. Currently, Adam preaches and teaches throughout the state of California, including his home church, Grace EV Free in La Mirada. When he is not studying or working, Adam enjoys watching sports (mostly, football and baseball) and reading on world events and political issues.

Juniors: July 19th -25th (Sunday – Saturday)

Searan Salibian

Searan Salibian is a Seattle, WA native and went through grade school without any other Armenians, except her big sister. Growing up, her parents made her take piano and violin lessons and she is so grateful, since she still enjoys playing them until today! She also was involved in karate, basketball and track and field. Throwing an iron ball and metal disk for the University of Washington Track and Field team helped put her through college (Heads up!), where she studied Psychology, Sociology and Music. She was discipled for the first time at UW and since then, has loved discipleship ministry. She left her Psychology Ph.D. program in Seattle to respond to God’s call to go into full-time ministry. She spent the next four years after college in Boston looking for leprechauns and pursuing her graduate studies; receiving a Masters Degree in Counseling from Boston University and a Masters in Divinity from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Through the years, the Lord has developed her heart with the desire to minister to people by developing relationships, discipleship, teaching, missions and outreach, and reconciliation. It is her heart’s desire to continually respond to God’s gracious gifts by serving Him and leading others to grow in their relationship with the Lord. She currently serves as the Director of Women’s and Children’s Ministries at United Armenian Congregational Church in L.A., and likes to keep clown sunglasses, puppets, tissues, bibles and candy in her office at all times…just in case.

Junior High: July 26th – August 1st (Sunday – Saturday)
Aren Bahadourian

Hey everyone! I’m Aren. My aim in life is to treasure and grow in and proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. That’s my passion, my goal and my prayer. That’s why I’m a pastor. I’m serving God at Armenian Brotherhood Bible Church in Pasadena where I work mostly in the youth and post-college ministries. I graduated from Talbot School of Theology a couple of years ago and last summer married Trina, for whom I'm daily thankful to God. I’m really glad you are considering to join us at camp this summer where our theme is…King Jesus! Join us as we study God’s Word and discuss what it means that Jesus is the King of kings and in light of that, how can we live each day surrendering to Jesus our King. I’m praying for you and hope to see you this summer at Camp Arev.

High School: August 9th - 15th (Sunday – Saturday)
Daniel Goglanian

Daniel Goglanian has been involved with Youth Ministry for nearly 25 years. During this time he has worked with Jr. High, High School and College/Career-aged groups to help them discover Christ, stay grounded in their faith, and develop a sound Biblical world view. With a humorous blend of truth and insight, Daniel has a way of connecting with people and bringing God’s Word to life in very real, practical and meaningful ways.

Having served Camp Arev since 1985 as Activities Director, Counselor, Speaker and Chairman, Daniel believes Camp Arev has a unique role in forming the spiritual lives of young people, their families, communities and culture. In his work as a college representative, he speaks to more than 12,000 high school students each year about values and character as it pertains to education and career choice. Daniel also heads the Youth and Music ministries at Armenian Christian Fellowship of Orange County and serves the greater Armenian Evangelical community by speaking at various Bible studies and church camps. He also enjoys coaching sports and playing the guitar.

The Weather... are we still having camp?

I know that the snow is of concern to many. The bottom line with Camp AREV is that we will make sure that the campers' safety is #1. We are in communication with both the bus company, and our facility care taker in Frazier Park. Should we find that there are any risks in driving up to camp, we will call every parent right away to let them know what the plan is.

For our Juniors weekend, it looks like we can expect beautiful mostly sunny days. There should be plenty of snow for sledding and making snowmen despite the fact that the sun is melting away the snow on the roads. We look forward to a safe and fun weekend!

PS. If you know people who are still interested in coming, call us.

A long time in not posting deserves a long post

As with all things that are "new", there is an interesting phenomenon that occurs. It seems that no matter the grandness with which something starts, or the enthusiasm behind a fresh idea, it inevitably goes through a definite period of "dwindling". It is, in my opinion, this period in which makes or breaks the original idea... Let's get this conversation out of the abstract and consider what exactly this means. Take a moment to think about someone, perhaps it is even yourself, who made a decision to start something new, or create a new habit. This decision or habit probably starts out great, be it a New Year's resolution, creating a timely homework schedule, or let's say someone creates a new blog. In most cases, it usually begins with a desire to see something happen, for example:
"Wouldn't it be great to let people know what is going on at Camp?!"

The idea is in place! Next, if the desire is strong enough, it moves into a new phase...

"yeah, that would be great... but how?"

At this point in the process, the person begins, bit by bit, to see how it might be possible, and the desire grows (if it's strong enough).

"Well, we have a Newsletter, which is awesome, but what if I miss the deadline? Also, what if I want to print the Camp schedule? Do I really want the donors to know the kids stay up until 12am? Hmm, what if I tried doing something on the Internet? I'm no web designer, but maybe I could find something to make this work"

Before too long, a plan is beginning to form and steps are created to make it happen, so long as that original desire is strong enough to keep it going.

"Ok, I know this person who made a blog and everyone read it, so it could work. All I have to do is make an account, find a technology person to make it visible to people interested in camp, & I can publish Camp Schedules and post things that people might read half of!"

From there, as long as that original desire is still strong enough, it's not much farther before the steps slowly start falling into place, and desire, means, and plan form into action.
Certainly, this is a silly, and as you might have picked up on, a real life example of how ideas become reality. What, though, does this have to do with the "new" things in life dwindling? Well, even in the creation of new habits and decisions, many times these things fade before they even start. They dwindle before they even have a chance to become reality. Sometimes this can be a good thing: I once wanted to live on a boat that would sail around the world for two years. For me, that was not a great idea, and thank God, I did not want it badly enough to see it through to reality. If we go through this process in the things we think we want, why on Earth, would we not think the things we are doing also need to be checked by our desire to see them through? Often times we get so busy with life that our doing supersedes our reasons for doing. This, once again, probably sounds a bit abstract, so to put it concretely:

(July 18th, 2008)
"Wow, Summer Camp is coming really fast, but I still need to post something. I have a blog, better not let it get old."
(4 weeks later)
"Wow, I only posted the Juniors' schedule, I probably should post something else... oh my gosh! I totally forgot to do the check in sheets, I'd better do that!"
(5 weeks later)
"Oh yeah, the blog... I am so tired... I'll do it later"
(8 weeks later)
"Oh. The blog... forgot all about that... how embarrassing."
(12 weeks later)
"Ok, this is silly. I wanted this blog to keep people informed and the last post was from week one of Summer Camp. I really want anyone who cares about Camp to have every opportunity to know what's going on that they can have. Even if I have to make fun of myself for not writing for 12 weeks, this is important enough for me to do it."

In the end, our reasons for why we are doing something are what will either: give us the motivation to keep doing what we need to do, or call it quits because our reasons for doing it in the first place aren't enough to keep going.

Lamentations 3:40
Let us examine our ways and test them,
and let us return to the LORD.

What we need to ask ourselves is this: what is truly important to me? What is worth my time, and worth the effort I put in? Do I do things "just because", or because the reasons I have for doing them are driving me forward? It seems, unless I am alone (which I doubt) that we all go through times of dwindling, whether it be in our resolutions, our habits, or our faith. This time, though often frustrating, can be vital if we respond appropriately... "is this still important... and why?"

...so is the blog still important to me?... yes... and I apologize for going this long without realizing it.

Camp is Upon Us!!!

It's hard to believe that Camp is here!!!

I wanted to say a big thank you for all of your prayers and support over the last 4 months of planning. God is so gracious to "see to the details" (Gen. 22) Through all the craziness of planning and waiting, I am now at a point of excitement! I can't wait to see the staff, ready to serve God. I can't wait to see all the details fall into their places. Above all else, I can't wait to see the campers as they interact with the lessons, friendships, and beauty of God's creation!

Please keep praying for us as we continue to lead young people into lasting relationships with the Lord!

PS. If you wish to see what we're doing at camp, check out the schedules & Menu!

In Christ,

Anxiously awaiting

Every day it seems like there is something that I am waiting on. Who will be our speakers? What type of activities will we have? When will the brochures be ready to send? Where will the staff sleep? Why didn't more people register early? How many kids are going to come?

In some areas of life one action will produce another. If you push the ice button on the refrigerator, ice comes out. If you dial a number, the phone rings. Simple right? What if like in my case, you don't have an ice button, or your phone doesn't work? See, not everything is so instant, no matter how hard we try.

If I could find a "complete all the steps needed to make camp happen" button, wouldn't it be great? All our staff, speakers, activities, campers, buses, food, everything to make a great camp would magically appear in a flash. What I wonder though, is what would be missing in the hours of calling, e-mailing, thinking, rearranging cabins, appologizing, & coordinating that would no longer be needed?

It's pretty hard to have an answer to a question like that... what if? What comes to mind though, is the picture of a parent who is expecting a baby. There is tension, and uncertainty, hours of preparation, and definately pain. When the long awaited child arrives, there has been so much thought and feeling poured into his or her arrival that the parents can truly say, "this was worth the wait".
